Speaking & Teaching

Rabbi Donald Meltzer receiving ordination, wrapped in a tallit

For me, one of the core aspects of being a rabbi is to want to share knowledge, wisdom and life perspective with others: namely to teach. And for me, the opportunity to teach in many different formats — one-on-one, in a small group setting, interactively with a somewhat larger group, or giving a D’var Torah (words of Torah) formally on a topic — also creates the opportunity to learn new things. As a newly-ordained rabbi, I have no “off the shelf” curricula, and while I do have a good number of sermons I have given in different settings and I have taught a number of classes, I find that every teaching circumstance I’m asked to participate in has unique variables: who is the audience and what are your learning objectives for our time together, how has the Jewish world shifted since I prepared previous material on the subject, how has my own thinking and life experience changed, what new sources have I read or listened to that have altered my perspective? All of these questions cry out for a bespoke approach to Jewish teaching and learning.

If you have a group that would like to learn in this type of bespoke way with fresh thinking on Jewish or Jewish-related issues, including liberal Zionism, whether in person or remotely, please feel free to reach out to me.
